John Cochran began playing guitar at the age of 6 trying to follow his older brothers footsteps. John was raised in a house filled with Soul music from Stax Records and Motown’s Detroit era. Cochran began his career at 18 playing in Tuscaloosa and around the Gulf Coast. He then moved to Mississippi to pursue a Jazz Studies Degree at Southern Mississippi. After USM John moved to Nashville and attended Middle Tennessee State where he finished his Masters of Music Degree in Jazz and Studio Guitar Performance. While in Nashville he played regularly on Broadway and around the Nashville area. During this time he also toured the United States with Johnny Hayes and the Loveseats and other groups.
John has studied with New Orleans based creative guitarist and composer Chris Alford and Nashville’s best jazz guitar educator- Paul Abrams. During his time in Nashville he also studied and performed with Allman Brothers Band Alumni Jack Pearson, who continues to be his teacher, friend, and close mentor to this day.
Cochran now plays with Jimmy Lumpkin and the Revival, Lauren Murphy and the Psychedelics, The Bodhi Trio, and others. He is music professor at both The University of Mobile and Coastal Alabama Community College.
John Coltrane has been a profound influence on Cochran’s approach to both improvisation and spirituality. The music being performed at this tribute is considered to be among the most challenging in the history of jazz. The Quartet features some of the finest musicians in the south and they will be playing music ranging Coltrane’s career from his early days with Miles Davis all the way through his Giant Steps and A Love Supreme albums.
