An Intimate Evening with Grace Askew

Playing guitar for over half her life, Memphis-based crossover songstress Grace Askew was raised on Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley and ventured to New Orleans to dig deeper into her blues/soul/rockabilly/folk roots. Feeling disconnected from the scene, she returned home to Memphis where she cut two EP’s at legendary Ardent Studios (Leon Russell, James Taylor, Isaac Hayes, Bob Dylan, Julian Baker and Low-Cut Connie have recorded there.) with producer Pete Matthews (Evanescence, Against Me) and eventually assembled a band.

In 2010, Askew self-produced and released Until They Lay Me Down to Rest, putting heartbreak and struggles as a musician into song. She hit the road and became a regular on the singer-songwriter circuit, but even with her Memphis pedigree, she never felt like she found her footing in that scene. After lengthy touring across the nation, Askew found herself in LA auditioning for the voice, landing exposure that developed at an exponential pace.To capitalize on her new-found fame, she went straight into Sun Studio to make a record called Scaredy Cat with Matt Ross-Spang at the mixing board. Though she loved the album, she felt it still did not represent her variety of music tastes, ranging from Tom Waits, Mahalia Jackson, Sylvan Esso, Jeff Buckley to Cat Power. Pulling away from the purist, traditionalism of the Americana scene and exhausted by trying to fit within its unspoken box of rules, Askew wiped away the line altogether and reached out to local producers, Elliot Ives (Justin Timberlake) and Scott Hardin, in order to free her sound and to swim against the current in a truly innovative musical crossover project.

Herein lies the birth of Warrior and Askew’s newly-found experimentations with the Ableton Push Pad. The six-song EP maintains Askew’s roots-y soul, but the bluesy growl has now been interwoven with a powerful and more modern foundation. Meeting in the middle meant adding synths, Native American vocals, electric guitar, robot voices, cello, gregorian chanting, etc. Sonically, it’s worlds away from the music Askew has made in the past, but it still has the heart of Grace.

Keep your eyes peeled as Grace Askew takes a journey with Warrior and releases more music and expands her horizons, showcasing her “real, raw, and righteous” (Rolling Stone) songwriting.
