Brian Boland joined the Coast Guard at the ripe old age of eighteen. Within weeks of putting on a uniform, those around him unanimously agreed that he wasn’t very good at it. Stubborn as a mule, he refused to quit though and after years of wrong turns, Boland discovered a small and eccentric community of folks that shared his outlaw spirit and spent their days flying to some of the most remote places in the world. Against everyone’s better judgement, Boland joined this ragtag outfit and sat himself in the pilot seat of a C-130 Hercules. The rest is history.
Ever since that first fateful flight, where he more than likely over-torqued at least one engine, Brian hasn’t looked back. Flying everywhere from Central America to the northern reaches of the Atlantic Ocean, and most places in between, he felt an insatiable urge to capture the emotion and experiences that have shaped his life. After publishing his first novel, Caribbean’s Keeper: A Novel of Vendetta through Warriors Publishing Group in 2016, Brian sat down with his guitar and started to chronicle nearly two decades of ups and downs that inevitably come from a life spent rolling for Uncle Sam.
Under the name Unknown Rider (a nod to the oftentimes trans-oceanic solitary flying in his line of work), Boland launched a project to capture his ideas through song. Working with a talented and diverse group of musicians from the Durham, North Carolina area, Unknown Rider released its first album, RTB, in May of 2017. Pulling from the grit of southern Rock and Roll and the tempo of Americana music, Unknown Rider transforms the raw emotion of a life on the road into sound. The good, the bad, and the ugly are seamlessly rolled together into ten songs that will leave the listener with a fresh perspective that speaks truth to the military experience.
